Fuel Tank Draining

WARNING: Gasoline or gasoline vapors are highly flammable. A fire could occur if an ignition source is present. Never drain or store gasoline in an open container, due to the possibility of fire or explosion. Have a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby. Always wear safety goggles when working with fuel in order to protect the eyes from fuel splash. Fuel vapors can collect while servicing fuel system parts in enclosed areas such as a trunk. To reduce the risk of fire and increased exposure to vapors: Use forced air ventilation such as a fan set outside of the trunk. Plug or cap any fuel system openings in order to reduce fuel vapor formation. Clean up any spilled fuel immediately. Avoid sparks and any source of ignition. Use signs to alert others in the work area that fuel system work is in process.
CAUTION: Do not force a hose or the siphon of a hand operated pump into the fuel tank. Forcing the hose or siphon into the fuel tank can damage the check valve located in the fuel filler pipe.
  1. Remove fuel filler cap. Insert the Fuel Flapper Door Holder (J-42960-2) into the fuel filler pipe. Connect the Fuel Drain Hose (J-42960-1) to the siphon hose of a hand operated pump device. Insert the Fuel Drain Hose into the Fuel Flapper Door Holder.
  2. Gently feed the Fuel Drain Hose into the fuel filler supply pipe and hose that lead into the neck of the fuel tank. Continue to feed the Fuel Drain Hose down through the neck of the fuel tank, until reaching the fuel inlet check valve. See Fig 1. The check valve is located near the bottom of the fuel tank fill pipe and can be reached with approximately 30" of hose.
  3. Use the hand operated pump device in order to drain any fuel above the level of the check valve. Remove the Fuel Drain Hose and siphon hose from the fuel filler pipe. Raise and support the vehicle. Disconnect the fuel filler supply hose from the neck of the fuel tank.
  4. Insert the Fuel Drain Hose into the neck of the fuel tank. Continue to feed the Fuel Drain Hose and siphon hose down into the fuel tank fill pipe and past the check valve, until reaching the bottom of the fuel tank. Reaching the bottom of the fuel tank will require approximately 18" of hose. See Fig 2.
  5. Drain any fuel in the fuel tank with the hand operated pump device. When removing the fuel tank drain hose from the fuel tank, the hose may become trapped at the check valve. In order to relieve the tension of the check valve, push the drain hose a short distance back into the fuel tank before continuing with removal.
  6. Remove the Fuel Drain Hose and siphon hose from the fuel tank. Pull gently and slowly in order to avoid pinching the hose as it passes through the check opening.
