Draining & Refilling

WARNING: When the transaxle is at operating temperature, take necessary precautions when removing the check/fill plug, to avoid being burned by draining fluid.
NOTE: Transaxle may be equipped with a reusable-type oil pan gasket. Reusable oil pan gasket is constructed of rubber with metal or plastic backing. On transaxles equipped with reusable-type gasket, sealing surface of oil pan is flat. Transaxles not equipped with reusable-type gasket have a ridge on sealing surface of oil pan. Clean reusable gasket with solvent. Inspect reusable gasket for damage and replace as necessary. Using any other type of gasket in place of reusable-type gasket may result in fluid leaks.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Loosen the oil pan bolts. Drain the oil. Use a suitable container to catch the transaxle fluid. Remove the oil pan attaching bolts. Remove the oil pan. Remove the oil pan gasket.
  2. Remove the oil filter. Use a long screwdriver in order to pry the oil filter neck out of the seal. See Fig 1 .
  3. Check the oil filter seal for damage or wear.
  4. As needed, remove the seal using the Slide Hammer (J 6125-1B) and the Axle Boot Remover (J 23129).
  5. Install a new seal, as needed. Before installing, coat the new seal with a small amount of Petroleum Jelly (J 36850). See Fig 2 .
  6. Install a new filter into the case.
  7. Clean and inspect the oil pan for dents or damage. Dry the oil pan before installation. Install the oil pan gasket. Use a new gasket if the sealing ribs are damaged.
  8. Install the oil pan. Replace the bottom pan if damaged. Install the oil pan attaching bolts. Tighten the bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Lower the vehicle.
  9. Refill the transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level. See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS  and FLUID CAPACITIES  . Inspect the oil pan gasket for leaks.
