Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Check for DTC P0115 with a scan tool. Is DTC P0115 set? If yes, go to DTC P0115: ECT SENSOR CIRCUIT  . If no, go to next step.
  3. Measure the actual coolant temperature. Turn ON ignition, with engine OFF. Observe the ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Is the ECT sensor value displayed near the actual coolant temperature? If yes, go to step  11 . If no, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect the ECT sensor electrical connector. Observe the ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Does the engine coolant temperature equal -40°F (-40 C). If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8 .
  5. Jumper ECT sensor input circuit and ground circuit together at ECT sensor harness connector. Observe ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Does the engine coolant temperature equal 284°F (140°C). If yes, go to step  13 . If no, go to next step.
  6. Jump the ECT sensor input circuit to chassis ground. Observe the ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Does the engine coolant temperature equal 284°F (140°C). If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8 .
  7. Repair the open or high resistance in the ECT sensor ground circuit. Is the action complete? If yes, go to step  14 . If no, go to step  9 .
  8. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the PCM electrical connector C2. Check the ECT sensor input circuit for a short or a high electrical resistance. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  14 . If no, go to next step.
  9. Check for a faulty connection at the PCM and the ECT electrical connectors. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  14 . If no, go to next step.
  10. Replace PCM. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to step  14 .
  11. Inspect engine cooling system for a faulty thermostat, low coolant level, incorrect coolant, or faulty cooling system operation. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  14 . If cooling system is okay, go to next step.
  12. Perform the scan tool Clear DTC Information function. Place the vehicle into Check Mode, using the scan tool. Operate the vehicle within the Freeze Frame conditions as specified. Does DTC P0116 set? If yes, go to next step If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  13. Replace ECT sensor. After replacing sensor, go to next step.
  14. Perform the scan tool Clear DTC Information function and road test the vehicle within the Freeze Frame conditions that set the DTC. Review the scan tool data and check for DTCs. The repair is complete if no DTCs are stored. Are any DTCs displayed on scan tool? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2 .
  15. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, system is okay.
