Test A: Starter Solenoid Does Not Click
- Did you review the following description and operations and perform the necessary inspections?
If yes, go to next step. If no, go to SYMPTOMS - ENGINE ELECTRICAL
under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the starter solenoid click? If yes, go to INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS
under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If no, go to next step.
- Install a scan tool. Monitor the Starter Switch parameter in the Engine Data list. Does the starter switch indicate Cranking when the ignition switch is in the START position? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 9
.
- Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit from the starter solenoid. Connect a test lamp between the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit and a good ground. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 12
. If no, go to next step.
- Test the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit for a high resistance or an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21
. If no, go to next step.
- Test the ST relay supply voltage circuit for a high resistance or an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21
. If no, go to next step.
- Test the ST relay control circuit for a high resistance or an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21
. If no, go to next step.
- Test the ST relay coil crank voltage circuit for a high resistance or an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21
. If no, go to step 18
.
- Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch or the Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch. Connect a 10 Amp fused jumper between the crank voltage circuit and the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit of the appropriate switch. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 13
. If no, go to next step.
- Connect a test lamp between the crank voltage circuit of the PNP switch or the CPP switch and a good ground. Turn the ignition to the START position. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 16
. If no, go to next step.
- Test the crank voltage circuit of the PNP switch or the CPP switch for a high resistance or an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21
. If no, go to step 15
.
- Inspect for a poor connection at starter solenoid. See INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS
under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21
. If no, go to step 17
.
- Inspect the PNP switch or the CPP switch for proper operation. Use the scan tool to monitor the PNP switch positions. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21
. If no, go to next step.
- Inspect for a poor connection at the PNP switch or at the CPP switch. See INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS
under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21
. If no, go to step 19
.
- Inspect for a poor connection at the ignition switch. See INTERMITTENTS OR POOR CONNECTIONS
under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 21
. If no, go to step 20
.
- Repair the high resistance or open in the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 21
.
- Replace the starter. See STARTER
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 21
.
- Replace the starter relay. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 21
.
- Replace the PNP switch or the CPP switch.
- For PNP switch, see PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SERVICING - A/T article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION in TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION.
- For clutch pedal position switch, see CLUTCH PEDAL POSITION (CPP) SWITCH
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in CLUTCHES article in CLUTCHES MANUAL & HYDRAULIC in TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION.
Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 21
.
- Replace the ignition switch. See IGNITION SWITCH/STEERING LOCK
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to next step.
- Operate the system for which the symptom occurred. Did you correct the condition? If yes, the system is okay. If no, go to step 3
.
