Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and 2003 Chevrolet Impala. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield, if equipped with 3.8L. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.8L.
  2. Drain the coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Engine Cooling.

  4. Use J 38185  in order to position aside the heater hose inlet and outlet clamp at the heater core.
  5. Disconnect the inlet and outlet heater hose from the heater core.
  6. Remove the vacuum tank. Refer to Vacuum Tank Replacement in HVAC System - Manual.
  7. Remove the floor carpet. Refer to Carpet Replacement - Front in Interior Trim.
  8. Remove the rear floor air outlet duct from the holes in the floor reinforcement.
  9. Disconnect the rear floor air outlet duct from the heater core outlet cover.
  10. Remove the bolts from the vacuum harness bracket and position bracket aside.

    IMPORTANT: Position the heater outlet cover downward and rearward in order to disconnect the cover from the rear area floor duct assembly.
  12. Remove the heater outlet cover screws.
  13. Remove the heater outlet cover.

  15. Remove the heater core cover screws.
  16. Remove the heater core cover.

  18. Remove and discard the seals (1,2) from the heater core cover.
  19. Remove the caulk (3) from the heater core outlet cover.

  21. Remove and discard the outer seal (5) from the heater core.

  23. Remove the heater core pipe retainer clamp screw (2) from the heater core retainer clamp.
  24. Remove the heater core retaining clamp screw (1) from the heater core.
  25. Remove the retaining clamp from the heater core.

  27. Remove the heater core from the HVAC lower case.
  28. Remove the heater core pipe retainer clamp from the heater core pipes.

  30. Remove and discard the heater core lower seal (4) from the HVAC case.

  32. Remove and discard the heater core center seal (3) from the HVAC case.

  34. Remove and discard the heater core upper seal (2) from the HVAC lower case.

  36. Remove and discard the heater core side seals (1) from the HVAC lower case.
