Vehicle Communication Unit
WARNING:
Vehicles are equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
CAUTION:
Use correct fastener in correct location. Replacement fasteners must be correct part number for application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in service procedures. DO NOT use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage fastener. Use correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to part and systems.
NOTE:
Never exchange Vehicle Communication Unit (VCU) from another vehicle. VCU has an 11-digit Electronic Serial Number (ESN).
- VCU is located behind left side of instrument panel, below Vehicle Interface Unit (VIU). See Figure . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Pull windshield garnish molding from "A" pillar in order to disengage retaining tabs and clips. See Figure . Remove windshield garnish molding from "A" pillar.
- Lift IP upper trim panel approximately 2" (51 mm) and pull rearward to release retainers. See Figure . Remove Daytime Running Light (DRL) ambient light sensor and sun load sensor from IP upper trim panel (if equipped). Turn DRL and sun load sensors counterclockwise to remove. Remove IP upper trim panel.
- Remove clip-on VCU-to-bracket strap. Disconnect harness connector and coaxial cable from VCU. Remove VCU from bracket and record VCU 11-digit ESN.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Press and hold cell phone "end call" button (Black button with White dot). OnStar(R) status light will change from Green to Red to Green. Contact OnStar(R) support line by pressing Blue OnStar(R) button twice. OnStar(R) support line will require 11-digit ESN recorded in step 3 .
CAUTION:
Remove Instrument Panel (IP) upper trim panel slowly, retainer clips could possibly fall into IP.
