Shift Cable: Installation

  1. Install the shift select cable into the bulkhead from the passenger compartment side. See Fig 4 . Secure with 2 bolts (1) at inner shift select cable grommet retainer and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  2. Install the PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Install the carpet to the floor under the instrument panel compartment. Secure the carpet retaining bracket. Connect the shift select cable (1) into the manual selector base (2). See Fig 2 . Connect the shift select cable (2) to gearshift lever assembly. See Fig 3 . Secure the gearshift lever assembly (1).
  4. Install the center console. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEMS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
  5. Install the outer shift select cable grommet retainer to the bulkhead. See Fig 4 . Secure the shift select cable grommet retainer with 2 bolts. Tighten the outer shift select cable grommet retainer bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Install the shift select cable (3) into the shift select cable bracket (2). See Fig 1 . Secure the shift select cable with the E-clip. Install the shift select cable into the manual lever. Secure the shift select cable with one lock washer and one nut. DO NOT tighten fully.
  7. Adjust the shift select cable. See SHIFT CONTROL CABLE  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  8. Install the left splash shield to the vehicle with 6 bolts. Install the heat shield and tighten the bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  9. Install the rack and pinion to the vehicle. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate POWER RACK & PINION article in STEERING. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Install the shift select cable into the T.V. cable guide bracket. Connect the negative battery cable. With the ignition switch in the LOCK position and the manual selector in the PARK position, attempt to manually push the vehicle. Vehicle should not move.
  11. Verify that the vehicle cannot be driven in the NEUTRAL position. Verify the vehicle can be driven in the DRIVE, DRIVE 2 and in LOW gear positions. Verify that REVERSE gear operates in the REVERSE position.
