Engine Controls Diagnostic System Check

NOTE: DO NOT perform this diagnostic if no driveability condition exists, unless directed from another procedure. Search for applicable technical service bulletins before proceeding with diagnosis. DO NOT clear DTCs unless instructed by a diagnostic procedure. Ensure Powertrain Control Module (PCM) grounds are clean, tight, and in proper location. If a no start condition exists, diagnose no start condition. See appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure battery cables are clean and tight.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel, right of steering column. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, perform TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Attempt to communicate with Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool communicates with PCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with PCM, perform TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Turn ignition switch to START position. If engine starts and idles, go to next step. If engine does not start, diagnose no start condition. See appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  4. Select DTC INFORMATION on scan tool. If scan tool displays any PCM DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any PCM DTCs, go to step  7 .
  5. Using scan tool, record and store DTC information, then go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays DTC P1600 only, diagnose DTC P1600. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If scan tool displays DTCs other than P1600, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
  7. If vehicle is not equipped with a 3-speed automatic transmission, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with a 3-speed automatic transmission, diagnose automatic transmission by symptom. See appropriate OVERHAUL article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
  8. If vehicle is not equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission, perform automatic transmission diagnostic system check. See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK (4-SPEED)  .
  9. If concern is not related to Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing, go to next step. If concern is related to I/M testing, perform inspection/maintenance system check. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  10. Diagnose engine control system by symptom. See appropriate TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If concern still exists, diagnose intermittent condition. See PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS  under INTERMITTENTS.
