Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Chevrolet Prizm. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If SIR Diagnostic System Check has been performed, go to next step. If SIR Diagnostic System Check has not been performed, go to SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect SDM connectors. See Figure . Measure resistance between SDM connector C2 terminals No. 11 and 12. See Figure . If resistance is 754-886 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 754-886 ohms, go to step 5).
  3. Measure resistance between SDM connector C2 terminal No. 12 and ground. See Figure . If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is less than infinite, go to step 9).
  4. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between SDM connector C2 terminal No. 12 and ground. See Figure . If voltage is one volt or greater, go to step 11). If voltage is less than one volt, go to step 13).
  5. Disconnect left-side discriminating sensor connector. See Figure . Measure resistance between discriminating sensor connector terminals. If resistance is 754-886 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 754-886 ohms, go to step 14).
  6. Measure resistance between SDM connector C2 terminals No. 11 and 12. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is less than infinite, go to step 16).
  7. Zero Digital Multimeter (J-39200). Measure resistance between discriminating sensor connector terminal No. 1 and SDM connector C2 terminal No. 12. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 0-0.5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 0.5 ohms, go to step 18).
  8. Measure resistance between discriminating sensor connector terminal No. 2 and SDM connector C2 terminal No. 11. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is greater than 0.5 ohms, go to step 19). If resistance is 0-0.5 ohms, an intermittent malfunction exists. Refer to Diagnostic Aids for information on repairing circuit. Repair as necessary.
  9. Disconnect left-side discriminating sensor connector. See Figure . Measure resistance between SDM connector C2 terminal No. 12 and ground. See Figure . If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is less than infinite, go to step 15).
  10. Measure resistance between SDM connector C2 terminal No. 11 and ground. See Figure . If resistance is less than infinite, go to step 17). If resistance is infinite, an intermittent malfunction exists. Refer to Diagnostic Aids for information on repairing circuit. Repair as necessary.
  11. Disconnect left-side discriminating sensor connector. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between SDM connector C2 terminal No. 12 and ground. See Figure . If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is one volt or greater, go to step 20).
  12. Measure voltage between SDM connector C2 terminal No. 11 and ground. See Figure . If voltage is one volt or greater, go to step 21). If voltage is less than one volt, an intermittent malfunction exists. Refer to Diagnostic Aids for information on repairing circuit. Repair as necessary.
  13. Replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  . Go to step 22).
  14. Replace left-side front-end discriminating sensor. See FRONT-END DISCRIMINATING SENSORS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  . Go to step 22).
  15. Repair short to ground in Brown wire between discriminating sensor and SDM connectors. Go to step 22).
  16. Repair short between Brown and White/Red wires. Go to step 22).
  17. Repair short to ground in White/Red wire between discriminating sensor and SDM connectors. Go to step 22).
  18. Repair open or high resistance in White/Red wire between discriminating sensor and SDM connectors. Go to step 22).
  19. Repair open or high resistance in Brown wire between discriminating sensor and SDM connectors. Go to step 22).
  20. Repair short to voltage in Brown wire between discriminating sensor and SDM connectors. Go to step 22).
  21. Repair short to voltage in White/Red wire between discriminating sensor and SDM connectors. Go to next step.
  22. Reconnect all SIR components. Ensure all components are mounted properly. Go to SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
