Cruise Control Inoperative
NOTE:
To avoid misdiagnosis, perform PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Check for stored DTCs. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cruise control module harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" (Brown wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 29 .
- Using a test light connected to cruise control module harness connector terminal "E" (Black/White wire), probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" (Brown wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 30 .
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Turn cruise control switch to OFF position. Using a test light connected to ground, individually probe cruise control module harness connector terminals "A" (Gray wire), "B" (Dark Blue wire) and "C" (Gray/Black wire). If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates at any circuit, go to step 13 .
- Turn ignition and cruise control switches to ON position. Using a test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" (Gray wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 14 .
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "B" (Dark Blue wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 16 .
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "C" (Gray/Black wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 17 .
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe Purple wire at brakelight switch harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 18 .
- Press brake pedal while observing test light. If test light goes out, go to next step. It test light remains illuminated, go to step 19 .
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe White wire terminal at brakelight switch harness connector. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 20 .
- Press brake pedal while observing test light. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 21 .
- Using a test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "J" (Light Blue/Black wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 22 .
- Raise and support vehicle so that drive wheels may be rotated. Using DVOM set to AC volts scale and connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "K" (Dark Green/White wire). Observe voltage while rotating one of the drive wheels. If voltage varies 0-5 volts, go to step 28 . If voltage does not vary 0-5 volts, go to step 23 .
- Check wire which caused test light to illuminate for short to voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair wire in question as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 27 .
- Check Gray wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" and cruise control functional switches harness connector for open or high resistance. Repair Gray wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If open and resistance checks are okay, go to next step.
- Check Gray wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" and cruise control functional switches harness connector for short to voltage. Repair Gray wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 27 .
- Check Dark Blue wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "B" and cruise control functional switches harness connector for open or high resistance. Repair Dark Blue wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If open and resistance checks are okay, go to step 27 .
- Check Gray/Black wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "C" and cruise control functional switches harness connector for open or high resistance. Repair Gray/Blackwire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If open and resistance checks are okay, go to step 27 .
- Check Purple wire for open or high resistance. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair Purple wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 24 .
- Check Purple wire for short to voltage. Repair Purple wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 24 .
- Check White wire for short to voltage. Repair White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 24 .
- Check White wire for open or high resistance. Repair White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire(s) is okay, go to step 24 .
- Check Light Blue/Black wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "J" and VCM harness connector for open or high resistance. Repair Light Blue/Black wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 26 .
- Check Dark Green/White wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "K" and VCM harness connector for open or high resistance. Repair Dark Green/White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 26 .
- Check TCC/brakelight switch for adjustment and proper installation. See TCC/BRAKELIGHT SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at TCC/brakelight switch harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If no problem is found, go to step 31 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at VCM harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If no problem is found, go to step 32 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at cruise control functional switches harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If no problem is found, go to step 33 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at cruise control module harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If no problem is found, go to step 34 .
- Repair Brown wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" and CRUISE fuse No. 6 (10-amp) in instrument panel fuse block. After repair, check system for normal operation.
- Repair Black/White wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "E" and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, check system for normal operation.
- Replace TCC/brakelight switch. See TCC/BRAKELIGHT SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, check system for normal operation.
- Replace VCM. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repair, check system for normal operation.
- Replace cruise control functional switches. See CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTIONAL SWITCHES under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, check system for normal operation.
- Replace cruise control module. See CRUISE CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, check system for normal operation. If problem still exists, return to step 1 .
