Diagnostic Procedures
- If OBD system check has been performed, go to next step. If OBD system check has not been performed, see ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Connect scan tool. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, command wastegate solenoid on and off, listening for an audible click. If wastegate solenoid turns on and off, go to next step. If wastegate solenoid does not turn on and off, go to step 5.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 32-pin PCM harness connector (Blue). Turn ignition on. Using DVOM set to 10-amp scale, measure current between ground and solenoid control circuit at PCM harness connector for 2 minutes. If current draw is less than .75 amp., but not zero, go to step 8. If current is not less than .75 amp., go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Leave PCM harness connector disconnected. Disconnect wastegate solenoid harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and solenoid control circuit at PCM harness connector. If resistance is infinite, go to step 13. If resistance is not infinite, go to step 10.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect wastegate solenoid harness connector. Turn ignition on. Connect test light between solenoid control circuit and ignition feed circuit at wastegate solenoid harness connector. Using scan tool, command wastegate solenoid on and off. If test light illuminates with each command, go to step 9. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using test light connected to ground, probe ignition feed circuit at wastegate solenoid harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 12.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect wastegate solenoid harness connector. Disconnect 32-pin PCM harness connector (Blue). Turn ignition on. Connect fused jumper wire between ground and wastegate solenoid control circuit at PCM harness connector. If wastegate solenoid operates, go to step 11. If wastegate solenoid does not operate, go to step 10.
- DTC is intermittent. If additional DTCs are set, perform appropriate DTC test. If no DTCs are set, see Diagnostic Aids .
- Check for poor connection at wastegate solenoid. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 15. If connection is okay, go to step 13.
- Repair wastegate solenoid control circuit. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Check wastegate solenoid control circuit for poor connection at PCM. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 15. If connection is okay, go to step 14.
- Repair open in ignition feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Replace wastegate solenoid. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Replace PCM. Perform PCM relearn procedures. See PROGRAMMING . After repairs, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, and then enter DTC P1656. Operate vehicle within the conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, go to step 2.
- Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If any undiagnosed DTCs are set, perform appropriate DTC test. If no DTCs are set, system is okay.
