Voltmeter Displaying High Or Low

  1. Check voltage across battery terminals. If voltage is not 12-16 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 13-16 volts, go to step  3 .
  2. Test generator and generator circuitry. Manufacturer recommends use of CS Generator Electronic Tester (J 41450-B) for testing generator and generator circuitry. Go to CHARGING SYSTEM TEST  . If generator is faulty, go to step  9 .
  3. Compare battery voltage reading with instrument cluster voltmeter reading. If voltage readings are not within one volt, go to next step. If voltage readings are within one volt, problem is intermittent.
  4. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Measure voltage between instrument cluster harness connector terminals A8 (Pink wire) and B4 (Black wire). See Fig 1 . If voltage is within one volt of battery voltage, go to next step. If voltage is not within one volt of battery voltage, go to step  6 .
  5. Replace instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Recheck system.
  6. Measure resistance between instrument cluster connector terminal B4 (Black wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If circuit has high resistance, go to next step. If circuit has low or no resistance, go to step  8 .
  7. Repair Black wire between instrument cluster connector and ground. Recheck system.
  8. Repair Pink wire between fuse block and instrument cluster connector. Recheck system.
  9. Replace generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system.
