The engine oil level switch is a float-type switch that grounds the oil level switch circuit when oil level is okay. PCM checks the engine oil level switch circuit at start-up. Before checking the state of the engine oil level switch, PCM performs a test routine based on time and coolant temperature to ensure that engine oil has drained back into the sump.

To test for low oil at start-up, one of the following conditions must be met:

The LOW OIL light will illuminate for about a minute when PCM checks for low oil level and engine oil level switch indicates that a low oil level condition exists. Turn ignition is first turned on, PCM will command LOW OIL light to illuminate for a brief period to test light bulb.

Conditions for setting DTC:

NOTE: Ensure oil level is not low prior to start of tests.
