Description & Operation

NOTE: For information on Metro (M/T) models, see STARTERS - METRO (M/T) article.

Mitsubishi (Metro & Firefly (Canadian) -A/T) and Nippondenso (Prizm) starters are solenoid-actuated gear reduction type. Starters are equipped with overrunning clutch/drive assembly. The brush holder assembly contains 4 brushes and springs in the commutator end of starter housing. The integral starter solenoid is attached to the drive housing. All vehicles use either a Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch or a transmission range switch (A/T), or a Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch (M/T) incorporated within starter wiring circuit. Prizm also uses a starter relay in starter circuit.
