Battery Undercharged Or Overcharged

  1. Check ALT SENSE fuse (10-amp) in underhood accessory wiring junction block. If fuse is faulty, go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step 3).
  2. Repair short in Orange wire between junction block and generator harness terminal "S". Recheck system.
  3. Check IGN 1 fuse (10-amp) in instrument panel fuse block. If fuse is faulty, go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step 5).
  4. Repair short in Pink wire between fuse block and instrument cluster Natural 18-pin connector C1, terminals "I" and "M". Replace fuse. Recheck system.
  5. Disconnect generator connector. Turn ignition on. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located under steering column on knee bolster. Clear DTCs. Select MISC TESTS, ENG OUTPUTS and GEN L TERM. Using scan tool, command generator ON. Check voltage at generator terminal "L". If voltage is 9-14 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 9-14 volts, go to step 11).
  6. Check voltage at generator BATT terminal. If voltage is 9-14 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 9-14 volts, go to step 14).
  7. Turn ignition off. Reconnect generator connector. Start engine and run at fast idle. Turn accessories off. Check voltage across battery terminals. If voltage is 13-16 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 13-16 volts, go to step 15).
  8. Bench test generator. See BENCH TESTING  . If generator is okay, go to next step. If generator fails bench test, go to step 10).
  9. Replace battery. Recheck system.
  10. Replace generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system.
  11. Check for open or poor connection between PCM Clear 80-pin connector C2, terminal No. 61 (Red wire) and generator connector terminal "L" (Red wire). If circuit is open or connections are poor, go to next step. If circuit and connections are okay, go to step 13).
  12. Repair open or poor connection in Red wire between PCM connector C2, terminal No. 61 and generator connector terminal "L". Recheck system.
  13. Replace PCM. See REMOVE/INSTALL/OVERHAUL article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Recheck system.
  14. Repair open in Red wire between generator BATT terminal and starter (including fusible link). Recheck system.
  15. Replace generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system.
