Description & Operation

NOTE: For information on Metro & Firefly (Canadian) (A/T) models, see STARTER - A/T article.

Metro & Firefly (Canadian) models with manual transaxle use a Nippondenso direct-drive starter. Direct drive starter is a conventional 12-volt, 4-brush-type using an overrunning clutch-pinion drive. The overrunning clutch-pinion drive mounts directly on armature shaft drive end. Starter solenoid is attached to drive housing. When starter is energized, the starter solenoid engages starter pinion drive to flywheel ring gear. A Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch is incorporated within starter wiring circuit to prevent starter operation when clutch is engaged.
