Code 32, EGR System Error
EGR vacuum is regulated by an ECM-controlled solenoid. ECM will turn EGR on and off (duty cycle) by grounding and ungrounding solenoid drive circuit. Duty cycle is calculated by ECM based on coolant temperature, airflow and engine RPM. EGR should not exist under following conditions:
- Vehicle is in Park or Neutral.
- Throttle position sensor input is less than a specified value or TPS is indicating Wide Open Throttle (WOT).
With ignition on and engine stopped, EGR solenoid is de-energized. Grounding ALDL test terminal should energize solenoid.
NOTE:
Test numbers refer to numbers on diagnostic chart.
- Grounding ALDL test terminal should cause EGR solenoid to close, allowing vacuum to be applied. Vacuum may bleed off slowly; this is not considered a fault.
- Determines if electrical control part of system is at fault or if connector or solenoid are at fault.
- By plugging EGR valve side and removing ground from ALDL test terminal, solenoid valve should open and allow vacuum to bleed off through vent.
- With engine not running and vacuum applied to valve, valve should move to fully open position.
- System uses negative backpressure to open EGR valve. Valve should close when engine is cranked.
