Adjuster Assembly
- Remove splash cover, foam insert and cable cam cover from adjuster assembly. On vehicles with A/T, release lock tab on Throttle Valve (T.V.) cable adjuster in cable between adjuster assembly and transmission. See Fig 1. Fully extend cable sheath.
- On all vehicles, press reset tab on throttle body cable adjuster in cable between adjuster assembly and throttle body. Fully extend cable sheath. Disconnect cruise control cable from cruise control servo.
- Insert a 1/8" (3.2 mm) drill bit into adjuster assembly alignment hole. DO NOT allow drill bit to contact adjuster assembly gear or improper adjustment may result. Manually turn adjuster cams approximately 1/8 turn and hold in this position.
- Insert a 1/4" drive torque wrench, with extension, into 1/4" square drive on cruise control cable cam (TYPE 1), or through cruise control cable cam and into accelerator cable cam (TYPE 2). See Fig 1.
- On VIN P, turn torque wrench clockwise until a torque value of 71 INCH lbs. (8 N.m) is obtained. On VIN J, turn torque wrench clockwise until a torque value of 35 INCH lbs. (4 N.m) is obtained. On both VIN P and VIN J, several adjuster clicks will be heard while turning torque wrench. While holding the torque wrench in position, move the lock tab on the T.V. cable adjuster to the locked position. Remove torque wrench and extension.
- Fully depress accelerator pedal to automatically adjust accelerator cable. Remove drill bit. Ensure cruise control cable is installed in servo bracket. At servo end of cable, pull cable toward servo without moving throttle lever. If one of 5 holes in servo tab aligns with cable pin, push pin through hose and connect pin to tab with retainer.
- If a tab hole does not align with pin, move cable away from servo until next closest tab hole aligns, then connect pin to tab with retainer. DO NOT stretch cable to align tab hole with pin; a stretched cable may prevent throttle from returning to idle position.
- Using Tech 1 "Scan" tester with 1988-92 Brake System Cartridge, check throttle angle percentage by depressing accelerator pedal. With pedal fully depressed, throttle opening angle should be 100 percent. With pedal released, angle should be zero percent. If percentages are not as specified, check for kinked or damaged cables. If cables are okay, repeat adjustment procedure.
