Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

The VSS is a permanent magnet signal generator mounted in the transaxle. VSS produces an AC signal proportional to vehicle speed. This signal is amplified and converted to a DC signal by VSS buffer.

On 3.1L with externally-mounted VSS buffer, signal is transmitted to ECM, cruise control module and instrument cluster. The ECM, cruise control module and instrument cluster utilize monitored electrical signal to determine vehicle speed.

On 3.8L, VSS buffer is built into Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and functions in the same manner as the 3.1L. PCM provides VSS information to cruise control module and instrument cluster.
