Door Locks - Power: Description
Power door lock system consists of lock actuator (at each door), control switches, and door lock relay (except Astro, "C/K" Series and Safari). Astro and Safari models use 2 door lock relays; "C/K" Series do not use door lock relay. On all models except "C/K" Series, control switches activate a relay which directs current to lock actuators. On "C/K" Series, control switches provide a direct path for current to lock actuators. For location of door lock relay, see DOOR LOCK RELAY LOCATION table.
All doors lock and unlock from control switches. On some models, door locks can also be activated by turning door lock key to LOCK or UNLOCK position.
Lock actuator is a 12-volt permanent magnet motor. Reverse lock actuator operation is obtained by reversing electrical polarity. Electrical polarity is controlled by door switch operation. An internal circuit breaker protects the motor by automatically opening motor circuit when overloaded.
On Astro and Safari models, front door lock relay controls front left and front right door lock actuators. Rear door lock relay controls lock actuators for sliding door and rear doors.
Astro and Safari models use a door lock delay module to delay activation of the rear and sliding door lock actuators. If the sliding door is open when the door lock switch is operated, the delay module receives a signal from the sliding door jamb switch. This sets a logic circuit in the delay module. When the sliding door is closed, the door jamb switch signals the delay module again, setting another logic circuit in the delay module. After about 5 seconds, the delay module automatically triggers locking operation of the rear and sliding doors. On Astro and Safari models, door lock delay module is located under the instrument panel, at top of firewall near the passenger door.
On Lumina APV, Silhouette and Trans Sport, the sliding door lock actuator will not operate if the sliding door is open.
