Traction Control: Anti-Lock: Servicing
NOTE:
The ABS is considered maintenance-free, but when working on ABS equipped vehicles, the following precautions must be observed:
- NEVER connect or disconnect wiring harness plug of EBCU with ignition switched on.
- The EBCU MUST be unplugged when welding with an electric welding unit.
- During painting procedures, the EBCU may be subjected to a maximum of 203°F (95°C) for brief periods and a maximum of 185°F (85°C) for periods up to 2 hours.
- DO NOT use a fast charger to start the engine. Disconnect battery from vehicle electrical system when fast charging.
- NEVER disconnect battery from vehicle electrical system with engine running. Ensure that all connectors of wiring harness are securely connected.
- The entire ABS system MUST be checked with the ABS Diagnostic Tester (J-35890) after replacing modulator valve, EBCU, wheel sensors or wiring harness. Ensure all brake lines are properly routed.NOTE: If brake lines are reversed (inlet vs. outlet), it can be detected in one of two ways: Using ABS diagnostic tester, or by doing an anti-lock stop.
- For safety reasons, modulator valve MUST NOT be repaired. The unit must be replaced.
- DO NOT loosen any screws on modulator valve other than brake line connections. The modulator will no longer seal properly after loosening.
- When replacing modulator valve, it MUST be removed through access in rear storage compartment. Avoid damage to interior/exterior from brake fluid spillage.
- DO NOT attempt removing bottom of rear storage compartment to replace modulator valve. Be sure to clean rear storage compartment after replacing modulator valve.
- DO NOT support suspension components by wheel speed sensor wires.
- The wheel speed sensors are a tight fit into knuckle and should be pushed in by hand. Do not hammer sensors into position.
- The cylindrical surface and mounting plate of the speed sensor should be thoroughly coated with Anti-Corrosion Sealer (Part No. 12345106) where it contacts the aluminum knuckle. The sensor must be clean of corrosion and dry before applying sealer. DO NOT use chassis grease as a sealer.
- The wheel speed sensors must be installed in their respective locations. Each is identified with a white tag, located 20 mm from sensor neck, labeled L (left) and R (right).
- Remove tire and wheel assemblies when replacing sensors.
- Always note routing, position, mounting and locations of all components when performing ABS system service. Proper operation is possible only when system is restored to original condition.
