Steering Gear - Manual: Description
The manual steering gear system consists of 2 main components, the rack and the pinion. When the steering wheel is turned, the motion is transmitted to the steering shaft. From the shaft joint the motion is transmitted to the pinion. The pinion teeth mesh with teeth on the rack. Here the motion is changed from rotary to linear. The linear force is then transmitted from the rack through the tie rods and to the steering knuckles which steer the front wheels.
