Cleaning & Inspection: Notes
NOTE:
Always use lint free rags. Never use a wire brush. When necessary, mineral spirits can be used to clean parts. Carefully inspect mating surfaces, seals and bearings.
- Check rack for runout and tooth wear or damage. Check back surface .012" (.30 mm). Repair or replace parts as necessary.
- Replace housing if inner piston cylinder walls are scuffed, damaged or if housing is found to be cracked or porous. Check rack bore.
- The entire valve assembly must be replaced if found to be defective. The bearings can be serviced separately. Measure oil clearance between shaft and bushing. Standard clearance is .0002-.0047" (.005-.119 mm) and maximum clearance is .0049" (.125 mm). Subtract valve measurement. The difference between the 2 equals the clearance.
- Check inner and outer tie-rod ends for looseness. Replace if worn or defective.
