Trouble Shooting: Surging
- Ensure customer understands Transmission Converter Clutch (TCC) and A/C compressor operation. Perform trouble shooting preliminary check. Check alternator output voltage, repair alternator if output is less than 9 volts or if output is greater than 16 volts.
- If ALDL tool is available, check that VSS reading matches vehicle speedometer. Check for intermittent EGR at idle using CHART C-7 or CHART C-7a. See COMPUTER COMMAND CONTROL SYSTEM in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. Check for plugged EGR filter.
- Check for proper operation of ESC using CHART C-5. See COMPUTER COMMAND CONTROL SYSTEM in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. Check ignition timing. Check in-line fuel filter and replace if necessary.
- Check fuel pressure using CHART A-7 in this article. Check oxygen sensor for silicon contamination from fuel, or use of improper RTV sealant. Oxygen sensor may have a White, powdery coating resulting in a high but false signal voltage (Rich exhaust indication). This will cause the ECM to reduce fuel delivery to engine, causing surging problem.
