Governor Pressure Check

  1. With vehicle on a hoist (rear wheels off ground), disconnect vacuum line to modulator, then install a tachometer to engine and a pressure gauge to line pressure take-off point on transmission case. See Figure .
  2. Start engine. Keeping foot off brake, move shift lever to Drive range and check line pressure with engine speed at 1000 RPM. Slowly increase engine speed to 3000 RPM and determine if a pressure drop occurs (7 psi or more).
  3. If no pressure drop takes place, inspect governor for a stuck valve, weight or restricted orifice in governor valve. Check governor feed system for plugged or restricted screen in control valve assembly, restrictions in feed line or scored governor bore.
