Fuel Tank: Removal

  1. Drain fuel tank. See FUEL TANK DRAINING  . Release fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  . Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Remove exhaust system. See EXHAUST SYSTEM  under MISCELLANEOUS.
  3. Remove drive shaft.
  4. Disconnect filler hose from fuel tank. See Figure . Disconnect filler vent tube from evaporative emission (EVAP) hose. See FUEL LINE DISCONNECT FITTINGS  .
  5. Disconnect fuel feed hose, fuel return hose and fuel EVAP hose from chassis bundle. See Figure . See FUEL LINE DISCONNECT FITTINGS  .
  6. Disconnect fuel tank electrical connector. See Figure . Disconnect EVAP hoses from EVAP canister. Pull outward on retainer tab in order to disengage retainer from chassis. Disconnect electrical connector from EVAP canister.
  7. Raise lower control arms using a suitable screw jack in order to remove load from lower shock bolts. See Figure . Remove lower shock bolts. Remove screw jack.
  8. Position screw jack under rear frame near adjuster tie bar, in order to support front of rear frame. See Figure . Remove 2 front bolts from rear frame.
  9. Use care not to over extend the rear brake hoses. Lower screw jack until there is about 2.00" (50 mm) between front mounting surface of rear frame and chassis. See Figure . This will allow clearance to access fuel tank strap bolts.
  10. Remove fuel tank strap bolts. Position fuel tank straps downward around rear frame. Carefully bend fuel tank straps only enough to allow fuel tank to be removed. See Figure .
  11. Ensure fuel tank wiring harness, EVAP wiring harness, EVAP hoses at EVAP and fuel/EVAP hoses at chassis pipes are free from surrounding components while lowering fuel tank. With the aid of an assistant, carefully lower fuel tank from vehicle.
  12. Remove primary fuel pump/sender assembly, secondary fuel pump/sender assembly and fuel tank pressure sensor if replacing just the fuel tank. See FUEL PUMP/SENDER ASSEMBLY  and FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR  .
