Park Lock Cable: Installation

  1. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, pry the lock button of the park lock cable into the UNLOCKED position. Install the park lock cable at the transmission range control assembly. DO NOT attach the cable end to the pin on the control lever.
  2. NOTE: Do not attempt to perform this step with the ignition key in any other position except RUN.
  3. With the transmission range control assembly in PARK position and the ignition key in RUN position, snap the park lock cable into the inhibitor housing. Turn the ignition key to LOCK position. Snap the cable end onto the pin of the transmission range control lever (4). See Fig 3 .
  4. Push the park lock cable toward the range control lever assembly in order to remove the slack. Push the lock button on the park lock cable down into the LOCKED position.
  5. Inspect the park lock cable as follows:
    1. With the range control lever in PARK position and the ignition key in the LOCK position, make sure that the range control lever cannot move to another position. The ignition key should be removable from the lock cylinder.
    2. Turn the ignition key to RUN position and move the range control lever to NEUTRAL position. Make sure that the ignition key cannot be turned to the LOCK position.
    3. If the above checks are okay, proceed to next step. If the above checks are NOT okay, readjust the park lock cable.
  6. Raise the steering column and install the 4 bolts. See appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING. Install the steering column reinforcement plate. Install the console and the radio trim plates. Install the left closeout insulator panel. Secure the left front carpet.
