Test A: Reverse Lockout System Inoperative

NOTE: For circuit and terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  and WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  1. Did you perform the diagnostic system check? If so, go to next step. If not, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Press and hold the brake pedal. Attempt to move the shift lever into REVERSE. Does the shift lever move to the REVERSE position? If so, go to step  6 . If not, go to next step.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition. Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, observe the reverse lockout parameter in the DIM data list. Does the scan tool display an OFF status? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  17 .
  4. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the reverse lockout relay. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Press and hold the brake pedal. Attempt to move the shift lever into REVERSE. Does the shift lever move to the REVERSE position? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  12 .
  5. Turn OFF the ignition. Connect a test lamp between the reverse lockout relay coil side ignition feed circuit and the reverse lockout relay control circuit (Tan/White wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Does the test lamp illuminate? If so, go to step  13 . If not, go to step  15 .
  6. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the reverse lockout relay. Connect the test lamp between the reverse lockout relay coil side ignition feed circuit at the reverse relay connector and a good ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Does the test lamp illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  18 .
  7. Turn OFF the ignition. Connect the test lamp between the reverse lockout relay switch side battery feed circuit at the reverse relay connector and a good ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Does the test lamp illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  19 .
  8. Turn OFF the ignition. Connect a test lamp between the reverse lockout relay coil side ignition feed circuit and the reverse lockout relay control circuit (Tan/White wire) at the reverse lockout relay connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, command the reverse lockout relay drive ON and OFF several times. Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  14 .
  9. Turn OFF the ignition. Install a 10-amp fused jumper wire between the switch side battery feed circuit of the reverse lockout relay and the reverse lockout solenoid supply voltage circuit (Light Green wire) at the reverse lockout relay connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Press and hold the brake pedal. Attempt to move the shift lever into the REVERSE position. Does the shift lever move into the REVERSE position? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  15 .
  10. Leave the fused jumper wire installed. Connect a test lamp between the reverse lockout solenoid supply voltage circuit (Light Green wire) at the reverse lockout solenoid connector and a good ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  20 .
  11. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the reverse lockout solenoid. Leave the fused jumper wire installed. Connect a test lamp between the reverse lockout solenoid supply voltage circuit (Light Green wire) and the reverse lockout solenoid ground circuit (Black wire) at the reverse lockout solenoid connector. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Does the test lamp illuminate? If so, go to step  16 . If not, go to step  21 .
  12. Test for a short to battery voltage in the reverse lockout solenoid supply voltage circuit (Light Green wire). Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  25 . If not, go to step  16 .
  13. Test for a short to ground in the reverse lockout relay control circuit (Tan/White wire). Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  25 . If not, go to step  17 .
  14. Test for an open in the reverse lockout relay control circuit (Tan/White wire). Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  25 . If not, go to step  17 .
  15. Inspect for poor harness connections at the reverse lockout relay. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  25 . If not, go to step  22 .
  16. Inspect for poor harness connections at the reverse lockout solenoid. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  25 . If not, go to step  23 .
  17. Inspect for poor harness connections at the dash integration module (DIM). Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  25 . If not, go to step  24 .
  18. Repair the open in the reverse lockout relay coil side ignition feed circuit. After repairs, go to step  25 .
  19. Repair the open in the reverse lockout relay switch side battery feed circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . After repairs, go to step  25 .
  20. Repair the open in the reverse lockout solenoid supply voltage circuit (Light Green wire). After repairs, go to step  25 .
  21. Repair the open in the reverse lockout solenoid ground circuit (Black wire). After repairs, go to step  25 .
  22. Replace the reverse lockout relay (located in rear fuse block under left rear seat). Did you complete the replacement? If so, go to step  25 .
  23. Replace the reverse lockout solenoid (part of shifter assembly). See SHIFT CONTROL ASSEMBLY (CONSOLE SHIFT)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the replacement? If so, go to step  25 .
  24. Replace the dash integration module (DIM). See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repairs, go to next step.
  25. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for duplicating the symptom. Did the condition return? If not, system is okay. If so, go to step  2 .
