Shift Interlock Solenoid (Column Shift): Installation

  1. Install the A/T shift interlock control switch mounting bracket to the steering column. See Fig 3 . Install the 2 pan head tapping screws and tighten to 62 INCH lbs. (7 N.m). Install the A/T shift interlock solenoid onto the steering column. See Fig 2 .
  2. Connect the A/T shift interlock solenoid connector. See Fig 1 . Adjust the A/T shift interlock solenoid using the following steps:
    1. Pull the tab (1) out on the block side of the A/T shift interlock solenoid. See Fig 4 .
    2. Press on the adjuster block (2) to compress the internal adjuster spring to disengage the adjuster teeth. Slide the adjuster block (2) as far away from the solenoid as possible. See Fig 4 .
    3. Shift the column into the park position.
    4. Lock in place by pushing the tab (1) back in. See Fig 4 .
  3. Inspect the A/T shift interlock solenoid using the following steps:
    1. The A/T shift interlock solenoid must lock the gear shift lever when it is put into the park position.
    2. When the column is installed in the vehicle you will not be able to shift the gear shift lever out of the park position without pressing on the brake pedal. The solenoid will be energized.
    3. Readjust if needed.
  4. Install the upper and lower steering column trim covers.
