Test A: Charging System Test (Primary Generator)

NOTE: Required Tools: CS Generator Tester (J-41450-B)
  1. If diagnostic system check was not performed, go to ENGINE ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . After diagnostic system check is performed, go to next step.
  2. Start engine and observe charge indicator on Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), or charge message on Driver's Information Center (DIC). Does charge indicator light illuminates, or DIC display a message? If so, go to next step. If not, go to INTERMITTENTS  .
NOTE: Green POWER light on tester should remain illuminated while tester is being used.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition. Connect the red lead of the J-41450-B to the generator output terminal. Connect the black lead of the J-41450-B to the metal generator housing. Does the green POWER lamp on the tester illuminate? If so, go to step  6 . If not, go to next step.
  4. Measure voltage between output terminal of generator and generator housing. If battery voltage exists, go to step  14 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  5. Measure the voltage from the output terminal of the generator to the generator metal housing. Does the voltage measure equal to the specified value of "Battery Positive Voltage"? If so, go to step  12 . If not, go to step  11 .
  6. CAUTION: Make sure that the load is completely turned off before connecting or disconnecting a carbon pile load tester to the battery. Otherwise, sparking could ignite battery gasses which are extremely flammable and may explode violently.
NOTE: Be sure all of generator output circuit wires pass through the inductive probe.
  7. Connect carbon pile tester to battery. Connect inductive ammeter to output circuit of generator. Disconnect generator harness connector. Locate matching harness connector on CS Generator Tester (J-41450-B) and connect to generator. Does Red DIAGNOSTIC light on tester illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  13 .
  8. Start engine and allow to idle for 30 seconds. Increase engine speed to 2500 RPM. Does Red DIAGNOSTIC light on tester illuminate? If so, go to step  15 . If not, go to next step.
  9. Maintain engine speed at 2500 RPM. Turn on load of carbon pile tester and increase load until generator output is greater than or equal to generator load test value. See GENERATOR SPECIFICATIONS  . Does Red DIAGNOSTIC light illuminate? If so, go to step  15 . If not, go to next step.
  10. Maintain the engine speed at 2500 RPM and continue to operate the generator at the load test value. Measure the voltage drop from the output terminal of the generator to the positive terminal on the battery. Does the voltage measure greater than the specified value of 0.5 V? If so, go to step  11 . If not, go to next step.
NOTE: If the test has shown the generator to be OK, however the condition remains, test the PCM or its control circuit(s) to the generator.
  11. Maintain the engine speed at 2500 RPM and continue to operate the generator at the load test value. Measure the voltage drop from the battery negative terminal to the metal housing of the generator. Does the voltage measure greater than the specified value of 0.5 V? If so, go to step  12 . If not, go to step  16 .
  12. Repair the high resistance or an open in the output circuit of the generator. After repair, go to step  16 .
  13. Repair the high resistance or open in the ground circuit of the generator. After repair, go to step  16 .
  14. Disconnect generator harness connector, but leave alligator clips connected so Green POWER light remains on. Connect a jumper wire with an in-line 100-ohm resistor between CS Generator Tester (J-41450-B) harness connector terminal and a good ground. See Figure . Does the red DIAGNOSTIC lamp illuminate? If so, go to step  15 . If not, go to next step.
  15. If a problem exists with CS Generator Tester (J-41450-B). Refer to manufacturer's instructions, on how to test J-41450-B for proper operation. Has the J-41450-B tester been replaced? If so, go to step  3 .
  16. Replace generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  17. Operate system to verify repair. If system is not operating correctly, repeat test beginning at step  2 .
