Vehicle Theft Deterrent System 10 Minute Relearn Procedure

NOTE: Use this procedure after replacing following components: PASS-key III(R) (PK3) keys, Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) control module and Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

NOTE: If Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) module is replaced with a GM Service Parts Operations (SPO) replacement part, VTD will learn key code immediately. Powertrain Control Module (PCM) however, must learn new fuel continue password when VTD is replaced.

NOTE: If PCM is replaced with a GM Service Parts Operations (SPO) replacement part (after programming), PCM will learn incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. If PCM password needs to be changed, learn procedure will need to be performed.

NOTE: When performing either 10-minute relearn procedure or 30-minute relearn procedure, all previously learned keys will be erased from vehicle theft deterrent control module's memory. Additional keys may be learned immediately after first relearn procedure by inserting additional key and turning ignition switch to RUN position within 10 seconds of removing previously learned key. Use only a master key (Black) when performing first relearn procedure If you use a valet key first, vehicle theft deterrent control module will not allow additional keys to be learned.

Connect scan tool with Techline terminal to Data link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on lower left side of instrument panel, near steering column.
Using scan tool, select REQUEST INFORMATION under SERVICE PROGRAMMING. Disconnect scan tool from DLC and connect scan tool from vehicle to Techline terminal.
On Techline terminal, select THEFT MODULE RE-LEARN under SERVICE PROGRAMMING. Disconnect scan tool from Techline terminal. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a Master PASS-Key III(R) key (Black).
Using scan tool, select VTD relearn programming under service programming system.
At this point scan tool must remain connected for duration of 10-minute relearn procedure.

NOTE: On some vehicles SECURITY telltale maybe illuminated on steady for duration of 10-minute relearn procedure.

Observe scan tool, after approximately 10 minutes scan tool will display "Programming Successful, Turn off Ignition". Vehicle is now ready to relearn key information and/or passwords on next ignition switch transition from off to on.
Turn ignition switch to OFF position and wait 5 seconds.
With master PASS-key III key(R), start vehicle. Vehicle theft deterrent control module has now learned key transponder information and PCM has now learned fuel continue password.
