Diagnostic System Check

  1. Did you review DESCRIPTION & OPERATION? If so, go to next step. If not, go to DESCRIPTION & OPERATION  then, go to next step.
  2. Install a scan tool. Does the scan tool power up? If so, go to next step. If not, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
    CAUTION: The engine may start during the following step.
  3. Access the Class 2 Power Mode in the Diagnostic Circuit Check on the scan tool. Rotate the ignition switch through all positions while observing the ignition switch power mode parameter. Does the ignition switch parameter reading match the ignition switch position for all switch positions? If so, go to next step. If not, see POWER MODE MISMATCH in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  4. Turn ignition on. Attempt to establish communication with the following control modules:
    • Instrument Panel Integration Module (IPM)
    • Dash Integration Module (DIM)
    • Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
    • Rear Integration Module (RIM)
    Does the scan tool communicate with the control modules? If so, go to next step. If not, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  5. Select the display DTCs function on the scan tool for the following modules:
    • Instrument Panel Integration Module (IPM)
    • Body Control Module (BCM)
    • Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
    Does the scan tool display any DTCs? If so, go to next step. If not, go to SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  6. Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with a "U"? If so, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If not, go to next step.
  7. Does the scan tool display DTC B10XX? If so, check for Body Control Systems problem. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If not, go to next step.
  8. Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with a "B" that are associated with the charging system? If so, check for engine electrical problem. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in ELECTRICAL. If not, go to next step.
  9. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that are associated with the HVAC system? If so, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  table in SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If not, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 4.6L DEVILLE, ELDORADO & SEVILLE article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
