Diagnostic System Check

  1. Did you review DESCRIPTION & OPERATION? If so, go to next step. If not, go to DESCRIPTION & OPERATION .
  2. Install scan tool. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. Turn the ignition on. Attempt to establish communication with the following control modules, Heating and Air Conditioning Module (HCM), Climate Control Panel (CCP), Body Control Module (BCM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Does the scan tool communicate with the control modules? If so, go to next step. If not, see appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  4. NOTE: The engine may start during the following step. Turn off the engine as soon as you have observed the Crank power mode.
  5. Access the Class 2 Power Mode in the Diagnostic Circuit Check on the scan tool. Rotate the ignition switch through all positions while observing the ignition switch power mode parameter. Does the ignition switch parameter reading match the ignition switch position for all switch positions? If so, go to next step. If not, see appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  6. Select and display DTCs function on scan tool for HCM, CCP, BCM and PCM. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display DTCs, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  7. If scan tool displays any DTCs which begin with "U", see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If scan tool does not display any DTCs which begin with "U", go to next step.
  8. If scan tool displays DTC B10XX (XX indicates any 2 numbers), see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table. If scan tool does not display DTC B10XX, go to next step.
  9. If scan tool displays DTCs beginning with "B" which are related to charging system, see appropriate GENERATOR & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If scan tool does not display DTCs beginning with "B", go to next step.
  10. If scan tool displays any DTC related to HVAC system, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table. If scan tool displays any DTCs not related to HVAC system, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
