Wipers Inoperative
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Cadillac Catera. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition on. Disconnect wiper switch connector. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 4 (Black/Purple wire) at wiper switch wiring harness connector. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair power circuit (Black/Purple wire) to wiper switch. See WIRING DIAGRAM . Recheck system operation.
- Disconnect wiper motor connector. Measure voltage between ground and Black/Purple wire at wiper motor wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Black/Purple wire between wiper motor and instrument panel fuse block. Recheck system operation.
- Disconnect wiper motor relay. Relay is located left front of engine compartment, in ECM housing. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 8 (Black/Purple wire) at wiper relay wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Black/Purple wire between wiper relay connector and instrument panel fuse block. Recheck system operation.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 4 (Black wire) at wiper relay wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between wiper relay connector and ground connection. See WIRING DIAGRAM .
- Reconnect wiper switch and wiper relay connectors. Ensure ignition is on. Set wiper switch to low position. Measure voltage between ground and Yellow wire at wiper motor wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check for open in Yellow wire between wiper switch and wiper motor. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If no problem is indicated, replace wiper switch. Recheck system operation.
- Measure resistance between ground and Black wire at wiper relay wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between wiper relay connector and ground. Recheck system operation.
- Measure voltage between ground and Green wire at wiper motor wiring harness connector. If voltage is 5-12 volts, replace wiper motor. Recheck system operation. If voltage is not 5-12 volts, check for open or short circuit in Green wire between wiper motor and wiper relay. Repair as necessary. If no problem is indicated, replace wiper relay. Recheck system operation.
