Tachometer Inoperative

  1. Perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Go to next step.
  2. If tachometer is inoperative, go to step 4). If tachometer is operative, go to next step.
  3. Install scan tool to DLC. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . Select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS from the INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER MENU. Command tachometer from 7000 RPM to zero RPM and back. If tachometer responds as specified, go to next step. If tachometer does not respond as specified, go to step 5).
  4. If tachometer is inaccurate, go to step 7). If tachometer is accurate, test is complete.
  5. Repair open in Green wire between ECM terminal No. 80 and gauge cluster terminal No. 13 (instrument cluster terminal No. 22 or gauge cluster terminal No. 13 on 1997 models). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  6. Replace and program the instrument cluster. See procedures in INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  7. Install scan tool to DLC. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . Select ENGINE SPEED from scan tool display data list. Record RPM reading. If RPM reading on scan tool matches RPM reading on tachometer, system is okay. Go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . If RPM reading on scan tool does not match RPM reading on tachometer, go to step 6).
