General Service Precautions
NOTE:
The ABS/TCS system is basically maintenance free. When performing work on the ABS/TCS system, the following information must be observed.
- If welding work is to be performed with an electric welding unit, turn ignition `OFF' and disconnect the EBTCM connector.
- When filling the master cylinder, use only Delco Supreme 11 or equivalent DOT-3 brake fluid.
- During painting work, the EBTCM may be subjected to a maximum of 85C (185F) for approximately two hours.
- Some components of the ABS/TCS are not separately serviceable and must be replaced as assemblies. Do not disassemble any component which is designated as non-serviceable.
- Do not use a fast charger for starting the engine. Disconnect the negative battery cable when fast charging.
- The EBTCM and BPM valve connectors should never be connected or disconnected with the ignition in the ON position.
- Never disconnect the battery from the vehicle electrical system with the engine running. Make sure that all connectors of the wiring harness are securely connected.
- Always note the routing, position, mounting, and location of all the components, wiring, connectors, clips, brackets, brake pipes, etc., when performing service on ABS/TCS. Speed sensor wiring routing, and retention is especially important to help prevent false signals due to electrical noise picked up by the wiring.
Proper operation of the system can only be achieved if the system is restored to its original equipment condition.
The above notices do not cover every possibility, but are to be followed when working on ABS/TCS. When performing service work, become familiar with ABS/TCS and how it may be interrelated with other components on the vehicle.
