Preliminary Inspection
NOTE:
If engine will not start or stalls after start, refer to PFI CHART A-3: NO START OR STALL AFTER START
in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS
article.
Several of the symptom procedures in this article call for a careful visual check. This check should include:
- Check for blown or missing fuses and for relays missing or installed in the wrong locations.
- Check vacuum hoses for splits, kinks, and proper connections, as shown on Emission Control Information label.
- Check for air leaks at throttle body mounting, lower intake manifold, and upper intake manifold.
- Check ignition wires for cracking, hardness, proper routing, and carbon tracking.
- Check wiring for proper connections, pinches, and cuts.
The importance of these steps cannot be stressed too strongly, they can lead to correcting a problem without further checks and can save valuable time.
Before proceeding to diagnose symptoms, perform PFI SYSTEM CHECK in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. Ensure that:
- The ECM and "Engine Control System Fault" telltale is operating properly.
- There are no trouble codes stored, or there is a trouble code but no current code.
- The fuel control system is operating properly.
Verify the customer complaint, and locate the correct symptom. See SYMPTOMS . Check the items indicated under that symptom. If the engine will not start or stalls after start, see PFI CHART A-3: NO START OR STALL AFTER START in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
