Power Windows: Description

CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

A permanent magnet (PM) motor operates each of the power windows. Each motor raises or lowers the glass when voltage is supplied to it. The direction in which the motor turns depends on the polarity of the supplied voltage. The switches control the supply voltage polarity.

The left door switch assembly controls both motors and both express down window modules. The right door switch assembly controls only the right window motor and the right express down window module.

Each motor is protected by a built-in circuit breaker. If a window switch is held too long with the window obstructed or after the window is fully up or down, the circuit breaker opens the circuit. The circuit breaker resets automatically as it cools.

When the ignition switch is in RUN, the Retained Accessory Power (RAP) relays are turned on by the Body Control Module (BCM). Battery voltage is applied through circuit breaker 21, RED (660) wire RAP Relay 1, and the RED/WHT (76) wires to the left and right door switch assemblies. If the relay fails, the left and right door switch assemblies are powered through circuit breaker 23.
