Fuel Gauge

  1. Verify that other instrument panel components work. If components are okay, check for blown fuse, open in circuit No. 39s (12 volts) and 151 (ground). Locate Pink wire near trunk latch and disconnect. Turn ignition on, gauge should register above full. Connect a good sending unit to Pink wire, and ground unit to frame of vehicle. As float arm is moved, gauge needle should follow. If gauge needle follows, replace unit.
  2. If gauge needle does not move, needle may be sticking. Tap gauge. Replace gauge if necessary. If needle remains below "E", gauge is shorted. Check for grounded wire behind instrument panel and at trunk. If needle remains above "F", circuit is open. Check for disconnected wires or broken wires behind instrument panel and at trunk. Check for loose nuts at gauge.
  3. If needle remains at 1/4, calibration resistor is open. Check for loose nuts behind fuel gauge or cracked resistor. If needle is unstable, there is a loose connection. Check dash and rear compartment connections. If needle does not go to "F" with a full tank, check float arm free travel in tank.
