Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, monitor engine speed. Crank engine. If scan tool indicates RPM while cranking, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate RPM while cranking, go to step 4).
  3. Start engine. With engine running, move related harnesses and connectors between distributor and PCM. If engine cuts out or misses, go to next step. If engine does not cut out or misses, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition system test connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check voltage on terminal "A" at PCM side of ignition test connector. DVOM should read 5 volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, go to step 8).
  5. Turn ignition off. Reconnect ignition test connector. Disconnect distributor connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check voltage on terminal "A" of distributor harness connector. If voltage is 5 volts, go to step 11). If voltage is not as specified, go to step 6).
  6. If voltage was greater than 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage was less than 5 volts, go to step 12).
  7. Repair short to voltage on low resolution signal circuit from PCM to ignition test connector. After repairs, go to step 15).
  8. If voltage was greater than 5 volts, go to step 10). If voltage was less than 5 volts, go to next step.
  9. Repair open or grounded low resolution circuit from ignition test connector to PCM. After repairs, go to step 15). If circuit is okay and repairs were not necessary, go to step 14).
  10. Repair short to voltage on low resolution signal circuit from ignition test connector to distributor. After repairs, go to step 15).
  11. Repair faulty distributor connection or faulty distributor. After repairs, go to step 15).
  12. Repair open or grounded low resolution circuit from ignition test connector to distributor. After repairs, go to step 15). If circuit is okay and repairs were not necessary, go to step 14).
  13. Repair harness or connections as necessary. After repairs, go to step 15).
  14. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using required equipment. After repair is completed, go to next step.
  15. Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO function. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, then enter DTC P1371. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool did not indicate that this test ran and passed, repeat step 2).
  16. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTC(s) are displayed, go to applicable DTC test.
