Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect purge hose from canister side of vacuum switch. Turn ignition on, with engine off. If scan tool indicates vacuum switch is purging, go to step 6). If scan tool does not indicate vacuum switch is purging, go to next step.
  3. Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, command purge solenoid closed. If vacuum is present at canister side of vacuum switch, go to step 8). If vacuum is not present at canister side of vacuum switch, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Check purge hose for kinks or restriction between vacuum switch and canister. Replace hose as necessary. After repair is completed, go to step 10). If hose is okay, go to next step.
  5. Reconnect purge hose. Using vacuum "T", connect a vacuum gauge between vacuum switch and canister. Remove tank hose from canister and plug canister tank fitting. Start engine. Using scan tool, command purge solenoid open. If vacuum is more than 5 in. Hg, go to step 11). If vacuum is 5 in. Hg or less, no problem is indicated. Go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS. If code resets, replace vacuum switch.
  6. Check for open or short in canister purge vacuum switch signal circuit. Repair as necessary. After repair is completed, go to step 8). If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  7. Replace canister purge vacuum switch. After repair is completed, go to step 12).
  8. Check for open or short in canister purge valve circuit. Repair as necessary. After repair is completed, go to step 12). If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  9. Replace canister purge vacuum switch. After repair is completed, go to step 12).
  10. Replace vacuum hose. After repair is completed, go to step 12).
  11. Replace EVAP canister. After repair is completed, go to step 12).
  12. Using scan tool, select CLEAR INFO or CLEAR DTCS function to clear DTCs. Start engine and allow it to idle. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions required for setting this DTC. Select SPECIFIC DTC function then enter DTC P1441. If scan tool indicates TEST RAN AND PASSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate TEST RAN AND PASSED, repeat step 2).
  13. If any other DTCs are set, diagnose DTCs as necessary. If no other DTCs are set, no problem is indicated at this time.
