Manual Bleeding

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 32 other vehicles, including the 1992 Pontiac Sunbird, 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix, 1992 Pontiac Grand Am, 1992 Pontiac Firebird, and 1992 Pontiac Bonneville. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use only new, clean DOT 3 brake fluid. Never reuse contaminated brake fluid. DO NOT  use DOT 5 silicone brake fluid such as Delco Supreme No. 24. If necessary to bleed all calipers, follow sequence in BRAKE LINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE  table.
  1. Remove vacuum reserve from power unit by depressing brake pedal several times. Fill master cylinder and keep at least half full during bleeding procedure.
  2. If master cylinder is known or suspected to have air in bore, bleed master cylinder by disconnecting front fitting at master cylinder.
  3. Allow brake fluid to fill master cylinder bore until fluid begins to flow from front fitting port. Connect front pipe to master cylinder and tighten to 24 ft. lbs. (32 N.m).
  4. With an assistant, depress brake pedal slowly one time and hold. Loosen front pipe fitting at master cylinder to purge air from bore. Tighten front pipe fitting to 24 ft. lbs. (32 N.m).
  5. Release brake pedal slowly. Wait 15 seconds and repeat sequence until all air is removed from bore. After all air has been removed from front pipe fitting, repeat procedure for bleeding rear brake pipe fitting.
  6. Bleed individual wheel cylinders or calipers only after all air is removed from master cylinder. Raise and support vehicle. Install clear vinyl bleeder hose onto first bleeder valve to be serviced. See BRAKE LINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE  table. Place other end of hose in clean transparent container.
  7. Partially fill container with clean brake fluid so end of hose is submerged in fluid. Open bleeder valve 1-2 turns. Slowly depress brake pedal through its full travel.
  8. Close bleeder valve and release pedal. Pump pedal several times to push air toward wheel cylinders. Wait 15 seconds and repeat procedure until flow of brake fluid is clear and shows no sign of air bubbles. Proceed to next bleeder valve.
NOTE: Check fluid level in master cylinder frequently during bleeding sequence.
