Removal & Installation

  1. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. On vehicles with SIR, remove coil assembly retaining ring. Pull out coil assembly and allow to hang. Remove wave washer. Using spring compressor (J-23653), remove shaft lock retaining snap ring. See Fig 1.

  2. On fixed columns only, remove shaft lock spacer. On all columns, remove shaft lock, turn signal canceling cam, and upper bearing spring. See Figure.
  3. On tilt wheel columns, remove upper bearing inner race seat and inner race. See Figure and Figure. If equipped with cruise control, remove tilt lever by turning counterclockwise. Remove housing cover end cap and cruise control connector. Ensure multi-function switch is in OFF position. Remove multi-function switch lever by pulling straight out of switch.
  4. Remove signal switch arm and hazard warning assembly. Remove wiring protector from steering column. Remove switch connector from body harness connector. Remove multi-function switch retaining screws from steering column and remove switch from steering column shaft. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten switch retaining screws to 27 INCH lbs. (3.1 N.m). Tighten switch arm screw to 19 INCH lbs. (2.2 N.m). On vehicles with SIR, check AIR BAG light for system faults. See AIR BAG SYSTEM  under SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.
