Section 14 (Fwd Axle Shafts): Description

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 53 other vehicles, including the 1992 Pontiac Sunbird, 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix, 1992 Pontiac Grand Am, 1992 Pontiac Bonneville, and 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Axle shafts transfer power from transaxle to drive wheels. Axle shafts have inner and outer Constant Velocity (CV) joints. Inner CV joints can slide in and out. Axle shafts, except left inner axle shaft on A/T models, use a male splined end and interlock with transaxle gears by a circlip.

Left inner axle shaft on A/T models uses a female splined end, and interlocks with protruding stub shaft. See Fig 1 , Figure and Figure . Cavalier and Sunbird use an intermediate shaft to connect to transaxle. See Figure , Figure and Figure . Some models use dampers on right-side axle shafts. Models with Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) have a toothed exciter ring on outer CV joint housing. See Fig 2 .

CAUTION: On models with ABS, protect toothed exciter ring on outer CV joint, and wheel speed sensor on steering knuckle during disassembly and reassembly.
