Removing and installing engine (S55 engine)

Special tools required:

11 0 000
11 8 680

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Disconnect the BATTERY CABLE NEGATIVE TERMINAL .
Move engine compartment lid into SERVICE POSITION .
Remove the FRONT AXLE COMPLETELY WITH THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION .

To remove or refit the engine, the towing hook 72 15 8 108 670 is required.

Tightening torque 11 12 5AZ .

Disconnect plug connection (1).

Cable routing (2)

Release screws (1).

Unfasten screws (2).

Release starter motor (2) from transmission.

Lay cable clip (2) to one side.

Disconnect oxygen sensor cable from holder (2).

Release aluminium screws (1).

Lay down cable clip (2) loosely.

Attach special tool 11 0 000 in eye 8 108 670.

Slightly raise the engine with the workshop crane.

Disconnect transmission (1) from engine in direction of arrow on table lift 81 22 2 184 136.

Installation of special tool 11 8 680 on rear lifting eye (transmission side).

Position special tool 11 8 680 in the lifting eye with the lock pin (1).

Pull ball lock pin (1) toward the rear until both balls (2) are pushed outward.

Installation note:

For checking the correct installation of the special tool 11 8 680.

There must be a 6.5 mm gap between ball lock pin (1) and ball lock pin housing.

The gap dimension can be checked using a 6.5 mm drill.

Attach special tool 11 0 000 to workshop crane.

Suspend special tool 11 0 000 from the designated mounting eyelets of special tool 11 8 680 only (see arrow in illustration).

Undo bolts (1) on left engine mount.

Release screws (1).

Suspend special tool 11 0 000 from the designated mounting eyelets (1) only.

Lift out engine with workshop crane.

Mount engine on ASSEMBLY STAND .

Installation:

Position engine on front axle support with workshop crane.

Screw in screws (1).

Tightening torque: 22 11 1AZ .

Tighten nut (1).

Tightening torque: 22 11 2AZ .

Move engine to installation position with workshop crane.

Join transmission (1) to engine.

Fasten transmission. Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING MANUAL TRANSMISSION (GS6-45BZ) or REMOVING AND INSTALLING TWIN-CLUTCH GEARBOX (GS7D36SG) .

Reassemble the vehicle.
