Range extender digital engine electronics (RDME)

The RDME control unit is located at the rear right in the engine compartment.

The RDME-control unit is connected via 2 separate connector chambers. The smaller connector chamber is divided into 8 pins and 32 pins. The greater connector chamber is divided into 76 pins and 5 pins.

NOTE: Observe the numbering of the pins. See the appropriate wiring diagram for diagnosis.

The RDME-control unit is both, the data center and the control panel of the range extender. Sensors on the engine and vehicle deliver the input signals. The signals for activation of the actuators are calculated from the input signals and the setpoint values determined in the RDME-control unit by means of a calculation model as well as the stored characteristic maps. The RDME-control unit activates the actuators directly or via relays.

The RDME-control unit is wakened by the Body Domain Controller (BDC) via the wake-up line (terminal 15 wake up).

The after-run starts after terminal 15 OFF. The adaptation values are stored during the after-run. The RDME-control unit sends a bus signal to signal that it is ready to assume the rest state. When all the control units involved have signalled readiness to "go to sleep": The Body Domain Controller (BDC) issues a bus signal. The control units end communication 5 seconds later.

There are 2 sensors on the printed circuit board in the RDME control unit: a temperature sensor and an ambient pressure sensor. The temperature sensor provides thermal monitoring of the components in the RDME control unit. The ambient pressure is required for calculation of the mixture composition.

Item Explanation
1 Range extender digital engine electronics (RDME)
2 Ventilation
3 Plug connection, 81-pin (big connector chamber)
4 Plug connection, 40-pin (small connector chamber)
NOTE: During start-up, it is essential to make sure that the great connector 1 (81-pin) is connected first. Then connect the smaller connector (40-pin). The disassembly is to be carried out in reverse order (smaller connector first).

The following components are connected to the range extender digital engine electronics (RDME):
