32 13 572 Replace electrical steering box (EPS) (RWD)
Special tools required:

Attention!
Connecting line:
In the event of moisture/corrosion inside the two plug connections, check the insulation of the connecting line. If the insulation reveals any noticeable/striking features, partial replacement will be necessary. Otherwise it will be sufficient to replace the contacts or connector housing.
Attention!
Do not turn the steering wheel once the steering shaft has been detached from the steering gear. If the lower section of the steering shaft is separated from the steering gear, the steering column switch cluster may be damaged when the steering wheel is turned.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Clamp off BATTERY EARTH LEAD
.NOTE: High-current-carrying wiring laid with permanent positive connection (80 A fuse).
- Lower FRONT AXLE .
Slacken nut (1) two to three thread turns using size 12 socket.
If necessary, replace lower section 31 2 242 with lower section 31 2 246
Press track rod end (2) with special tool 31 2 240 off swivel bearing.
Unscrew nut (1).
Remove track rod end (2) from swivel bearing.
Installation note:
Keep track rod end to swivel bearing connection clean and free from oil and grease.
Replace self-locking nut (1).
Tightening torque 32 21 3AZ .
Determine dimension (A) to simplify following adjustment of front axle.
Loosen screw (1).
Tightening torque 32 21 2AZ .
Remove left and right track rod end.
Mount track rod end only after installation of the new steering.
Remove screws (1 to 4).
Tightening torque, 32 00 1AZ .
Installation note:
Replace screws.
Screw tightening sequence must be followed: Tighten screws in sequence (1 to 4).
Attention!
Risk of damage!
Pay attention to connector housing on steering box while removing steering box!
Tilt steering gear towards the rear (1).
Slide steering gear to the right hand side (2), until the left track rod can be fed out downwards out of the front axle support.
Remove steering (1) towards bottom.
After installation:
- Turn steering wheel in both directions to the limit position. The airbag indicator light must not light up in the process.
- Carry out PROGRAMMING/ENCODING .
- Teach in ELECTRICAL STEERING .
- Carry out WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURE .
