32 13 066 Replacing active front steering hydraulic steering gear (N55)
Close off line connections with seal plugs.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Draw off and dispose of hydraulic fluid from oil reservoir
- Remove TRACK ROD END ON BOTH SIDES FROM SWIVEL BEARING
- Remove TRACK ROD END AT BOTH ENDS OF TRACK ROD
- Remove LOWER SECTION OF STEERING SHAFT from steering box
- Release screw connection for WISHBONE AT BOTTOM LEFT AND RIGHT on front axle support
- Release connection OF THE TENSION STRUT ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT ON THE front axle support
- Lower FRONT AXLE SUPPORT
Release nuts and remove screws (1) towards bottom.
Replace screws and nuts.
Tightening torque 32 00 1AZ .
- Lower FRONT AXLE SUPPORT
Mark installation positions of pressure and return lines to hydraulic steering gear.
Release banjo bolts (1).
Disconnect pressure line (2) and return line (3) from hydraulic steering gear.
Installation note:
Replace all sealing rings.
Align pressure and return lines by way of marks and tighten down banjo bolts.
Tightening torque 32 41 5AZ (pressure line).
Tightening torque 32 41 6AZ (return line).
Only on vehicles with ARS :
Loosen nut of line clip (1) on front axle support.
Tightening torque 37 13 10AZ .
Loosen line clip on anti-roll bar and set line to the side.
Tightening torque 37 13 8AZ .
Mark installation position of pressure lines to swivel motor.
Release retaining screws (1) and (2) and remove pressure lines from swivel motor.
Seal pressure lines and connections of swivel motor with suitable seal plugs.
Installation note:
Pressure lines are protected against being mixed up by means of different thread diameters on the swivel motor connection.
Tightening torque 37 13 5AZ .
Lower front axle support completely.
Unlock and disconnect plug connections (1) and (2) on steering gear.
Remove hydraulic steering gear from front axle support.
After installation:
- Turn steering wheel in both directions to the limit position. The airbag indicator light must not light up in the process.
- Fill and bleed hydraulic system. See BLEEDING POWER STEERING UNIT or BLEEDING HYDRAULIC STEERING (VERSION WITH DYNAMIC DRIVE) .
- Check pipe connections for leaks
- Perform CHASSIS/WHEEL ALIGNMENT
- Carry out ADJUSTMENT FOR ACTIVE FRONT STEERING
- If necessary, carry out START-UP DYNAMIC DRIVE OPERATION
