12 14 550 Replacing control unit (DME)
Attention!
Read and comply with notes on PROTECTION AGAINST ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE (ESD PROTECTION) !
Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove VEHICLE BATTERY
- Remove UPPER BULKHEAD COVER
Attention!
Wire harness connectors must be always plugged in or be properly covered to prevent moisture penetrating into the connector strip on the engine control unit.
Attention!
FOLLOW instructions for removing and installing control units!
It is absolutely essential to read out the fault memory with the BMW diagnosis system and to create a fault memory printout.
Replacement:
- Carry out programming/encoding
- If no data can be read out from the previous control unit, carry out injection quantity compensation (description at end of instructions).
Removal:
Unlock and remove cover (1).
Unlock and pull off all connectors (1) in the direction of arrow at the control unit.
Unlock lock (2) and remove cover (1).
Unlock the lock (2) and release the cable clip (1) and place to one side.
Release the cable clip (2) from cover (1) and lay to one side.
Feed out cover (1) and remove.
Loosen screw (1).
Loosen the equipment holder (2) in the direction of arrow from the battery plate and pull it a bit towards the front.
Unlock locks (1) and remove the DME control unit (2) upwards.
Installation:
Insert the DME control unit (2) into the equipment holder until the locks (1) can be locked.
Insert the equipment holder (2) in the direction of arrow at the rear in the battery plate (3).
Tighten screw (1).
Tightening torque 12 90 1AZ .
Lock the cover (1) in the lock (2).
Lock (2) must snap audibly into place.
Connect all connectors (1) at the control unit in the direction of arrow.
All connectors (1) must engage audibly.
Lock the cover (1) in the lock (2).
Lock (2) must snap audibly into place.
Feed in and install the cover (1).
Attach the cable clip (2) to the cover (1).
Feed in the cable clip (1) and lock it in the lock (2).
Required follow-up work:
- Install VEHICLE BATTERY
- Install UPPER BULKHEAD COVER
Attention!
If the DME control unit has been replaced, it will also be necessary to reset the minimum quantity adjustment of the injectors!

- Connect diagnosis system and follow the diagnosis instructions.
