SUBJECT
M Models 1200 Mile Running-In Service
SITUATION
The engine in BMW M (Motorsport) models is a race-bred design which includes increased power output and maximum engine speeds compared to those in conventional BMW models. The increased power output also affects other major drivetrain components such as the rear axle differential; and in some models, the manual transmission.
A special maintenance service is therefore required on all M models prior to the first regular Engine Oil Service, known as the 1200 mile running-in service (RiS).
At the 1200 mile RiS, some or all of the aforementioned drivetrain components receive a fluid change. At the completion of this work, the 1200 mile RiS must be deactivated using the appropriate diagnostic path. This not only maintains the original counter for the Condition-Based Service (CBS) interval on all future maintenance operations, but also enables the launch function for maximum acceleration from standstill.
Overview of the major repair operations:
| Operation at 1200 Mile RiS | M3 | M4, Coupe and Conv. | M5 | M6, all models | X5 M, X6 M |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | Y | Y | Y | Y | Y |
| Differential fluid | Y | Y | Y | Y | Y, in center section only |
| M-DCT transmission fluid | N | N | N | N | N |
| 6-speed manual transmission fluid | N | N | N | Y | Not applic. |
| Bleed the charge air intercooler reservoir | Y | Y | N | N | N |
| Deactivate the 1200 Mi. RiS via diagnostic path | Y | Y | Y | Y | Y |
PROCEDURE
The CBS indicator at the bottom of the instrument cluster shows the remaining distance and estimated time until the 1200 mile RiS is due.
As with other CBS maintenance operations which are needed after the 1200 mile RiS, the indicator goes out a few seconds after the ignition is turned on. The driver's door must be closed for the indicator to be displayed.
The photo pertains to an X5 M; other M model indicators are similar.
Another indicator for the 1200 mile RiS is found in the Central Information Display (CID), via the path Vehicle info- Vehicle status- Service required.
"Break-in inspection" refers to the 1200 mile RiS.
After deactivating the running-in inspection via the ISTA diagnostic path, the "Break-in inspection" is deleted from this display.
The Key Reader will also show that the 1200 Mile RiS is required (arrow).
The revised translation "running-in check" appears in the 5/2015 version of KSD2, and the Key Reader/ISPA version 5/2015. Although the same revised translation for labor operation 00 00 600 appears in ISTA/D version 3.50.30 (available early 8/2015), the translations in the actual test plans (ABL) will be revised in ISTA/D version 3.51.13 (available late 8/2015).
KSD2 through 4/2015:
KSD2 as of 5/2015:
Technical Service checks the various lubricant types and fill quantities at the time of the first arrival of a new M model. At times, such details are not yet shown in ISTA for the 1200 Mile RiS because the development groups at BMWAG or the M Division were still performing last-minute testing beyond the editorial deadline. The pertinent Service Information for New Vehicle Preparation and Maintenance in Group 00 will contain such preliminary details, as will this SIB. Since preliminary data may sometimes change due to results in the vehicle long-term durability testing, the technician should refer to ISTA as well as to KSD2 for the most valid vehicle details; when available.
ISTA details for fill quantities and recommended lubricants are usually found in the "Text Search" tab, by entering 0000600 (no spaces) and selecting "Search for document number" for the specific vehicle being serviced. The repair operation will show as "REP Service- running-in check". Select the hyperlink for the appropriate component, and follow any further hyperlinks to reach the technical data (TED).
